Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. And sometimes it rains.

Hoo-eee lawdy! Sometimes getting the heck outta dodge is just what you need to mix up your life a little bit! I just got back from Las Vegas with my bestie Claire, where we got thunderstorm-ed upon, partied it up, relaxed by the pool, threw money at the tables, and saw a show. Whew. I am tiiirrred. I need a vacation from my vacation!

Shortly before the trip I had figured out that I was going to ask for a raise at my job, but there was no timeframe on exactly when I was going to do this; I was just going to wait for the "right time."

This bird has good timing.

The last day on the trip I got a really really random call to come in for an interview to work on a popular TV show, and it could be regular work. Huh.

And then, piece de resistance, I had met a new boy in Vegas! He's cute! He's successful! He's tall! ... and he lives in Seattle. Meh.

So now that I'm back, I have a timeline to asking for a raise (I got it!!) and I also went to the interview (and got that job too!!!)

And my new un-boyfriend has picked dates to fly me to Seattle!!!!!!!

BOOM

bibbity bobbity boo

Ok Mr. Universe, Ms. Give-me-what-I-want-Fairy, my Genie in a bottle with your stupid three wishes,

I appreciate all this work (and paychecks) you're throwing my way, but this isn't exaaactly what I meant.

Having two days off out of 20 is not what I was looking for! I am TIRED. And because I am TIRED I am having to pass up on fun stuff.  Like drinks with friends (you know how I hate to miss an opportunity to booze it up), birthday parties (hello, booze-portunity missed again!), and even line dancing (booze-a-thon!).  I've been forced to douse myself in Vitamin C just to keep from getting sick.

And to top it off, this "awesome" work you've been getting me? While not exactly "difficult," it certainly isn't what I thought I'd be doing with my life at this age.  I can see myself at my next high school reunion -

Classmate 1:
I'm so amazing. I dance professionally for Alvin Ailey as their lead dancer.

Classmate 2:
I have two darling children that I home school and my husband is a doctor AND a lawyer!

Classmate 3:
I was just the lead in a movie playing Brad Pitt's wife! (true story btw)

Classmate 4:
I've been traveling the world ending hunger and war! Joanna, what have you been up to?

Joanna:
Well, the other day at work I made reindeer water bottles...

So much for a little part-time gig to give me some extra cash during the week.  Now I am full-time mummy-juice, turkey-lollipop, craft-maker. Oh - and weekend teacher. Whew... I need a drink.

holla for a dolla

In my quest to make some money (and to help out a friend in a child-care pinch) I took care of his four year old twin girls from 8:30AM - 2:30PM.  I've done some babysitting back in the day, and while spending the day entertaining four year olds isn't really what I choose for my next career move, in the words of the (in)famous beauty queen Alana,

"A dolla make me holla, honey boo boo"
So I arrived at 8:30 and the dear little darlings were sweet as can be, and lucky for me looking forward to a new playmate.  And, oh, did we play.  Several board games, none of which were finished before we started the next.  Then they wanted to go to the park.  Well, I had passed a little park on the drive to their house that had seemed really close.  Close enough to walk.  This was important as mom had not left me any car seats and I didn't feel comfortable taking them in the car without.  So we set out.  What I thought was about halfway there, they started to complain about how far it was.  (Oh, did we take a stroller? No! The park was really close, remember?) We stopped in a little store for water bottles.  I gave them the opportunity to turn back, but no, they wanted to go to the park.  So we pressed onward.  As we were walking, I started to realize that maybe, just maybe the park wasn't as close as it had seemed when I was driving.  (duh!) Probably about 3/4 of a mile later, we arrive.  We play for about 20 minutes, and then they are hungry.  Did we bring snacks? *sigh* No.  So we head back...

Well, four year old little legs are very tired by this point.  So this idiot (me) has to piggy back them all the way back home, taking turns every so often so that each little munchkin's legs get a little rest. I am a sweaty mess by the time we get back to their house. Thankfully, they don't seem terribly worse for wear and definitely eat a good lunch.

After lunch, we go swimming, which also means piggy-back swims to the deep end, and generally climbing all over me in the pool.  The girls have a ball.  And, quite frankly, so do I.

2:30PM arrives, and my friend's wife comes home.  They are so tired one even has a little mini-breakdown.  Sorry mom, that's definitely my fault.  I head back home scratching all the plans to get stuff done and immediately pass out.  I sleep for about two hours.  Those girls exhausted me!!

Oh, and then my friend asks if I can fill in one more time next week... what do I say? "Sure!"

50 Shades

So a friend loaned me Fifty Shades of Grey and now all I want to do is read.  This happens to me sometimes with books.  Recently I read The Hunger Games Trilogy and it only took me four days to read the three books.

Here's how it works.  I pick up a really good book. (which, to be fair, Fifty Shades isn't exactly a "really good book," but it sure is engaging) I start to read before bed one night.  I stay up wayyyyyy too late with my eyelids propped up ala A Clockwork Orange .

A Clockwork Orange

Finally the words won't come unjumbled on the page and I know I must sleep.  My dreams are dictated by whatever I am reading.  The next morning I drag my exhausted butt out of bed and somehow manage to do whatever I have for the day.  If I don't have anything planned, there is a good chance I may not get out of bed, but simply reach over to the nightstand and read until I'm so hungry that I have to get up and eat.  I will then read at any point in the day as is convenient for as long as the schedule will allow.  Repeat until book is done. Lament that book is finished. Find another book...

As of now, I'm still looking for solid income so I really can't be doing this! And certainly it can't be good for my social/dating life as this creates some really un-sexy bags under my eyes.  Seriously, if this keeps up, I'm going to look like a haggard troll.  Let me essplain.  No sleep, so I'm too tired to exercise or do yoga (and bags under eyes).  No working out, so I'm fat.  I'm fat, so I don't have energy to work out.  I don't work out so I don't sleep well, so I'm tired, so I have bags under my eyes!!! Ahhhhh!!! Keep me from this fate!

Anybody know a good book I could read? ...
